Saint Ignatius Church

Saint Ignatius is the preserved church of the Collegium Ragusinum, which was the Jesuit college of the former Republic of Ragusa, which is now the Croatian city of Dubrovnik. The college, which was established in 1658, later closed in 1773 with the suppression of the Society of Jesus. The college complex is considered by many to be the finest Baroque set of buildings in Dubrovnik and even possibly in all of Dalmatia. The complex, which is arranged around Boscovich Square, also connects to the central Gundulić Square by a monumental stairway known as the Jesuit Stairs, which explicitly echoes the Spanish Steps in Rome. In popular culture, these steps were used for the infamous “walk of atonement”, as performed by the character of Cersei Lannister, in the final episode (“Mother’s Mercy”) of the 5th season of Game of Thrones.
