Originally founded in 1990, The Beatles Story Museum, located on the historic Royal Albert Dock in the Beatles’ hometown of Liverpool, focuses upon the history of The Beatles (“the world’s greatest band”), as well as upon the solo careers of every Beatle (i.e. John, Paul, George, and Ringo) post-breakup and the history of the British Invasion more generally. (Note: It should not be confused with The Magical History Museum, also located in Liverpool and owned by the Beatles’ former drummer, Pete Best, and his brother Roag. It tends to focus more upon the Beatles’ early history, includes numerous obscure items from the really early Beatle days.)
The Beatles Story contains mock-ups of The Casbah Coffee Club (Hamburg), The Cavern Club (Liverpool), and Abbey Road Studios (London, above), as well as a “Beatles in India” exhibit. Each museum also contains a branch of the Fab4 Store, which sells everything from Beatles t-shirts, posters, CDs, and books to special limited edition merchandise.
Additionally, numerous historical Beatles items are on display at The Beatles Story, including:
- John Lennon’s spectacles and white New York piano (used to write “Imagine”)
- George Harrison’s first guitar
- Ringo Starr’s drum kit
- authentic clothing items (such as the costumes used for the Sgt. Pepper album cover)
- original handwritten lyrics
- rare album sleeves
- never-before-seen photography
The Beatles Story was recognised as one of the best tourist attractions of the United Kingdom in 2015.
