Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises was originally founded in 1988 by the Greece-based shipping company Chandris Group to operate upmarket cruises to Bermuda. It later merged with Royal Caribbean Cruise Line in 1997, becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of the latter, and is now headquartered in Miami, Florida. Celebrity’s signature logo, a large “Χ” which can be seen displayed on its ships’ funnels (above), is actually the Greek letter “chi” (χ), for “Chandris”.

In 2001, the Celebrity Expeditions sub-brand was launched with the acquisition of a small boutique ship, the Celebrity Xpedition, offering cruises around the Galápagos Islands. Plans to extend the brand in 2006 with two more ships, transferred from Pullmantur Cruises under the names Celebrity Quest and Celebrity Journey, were changed in order to form an entirely new line called Azamara Cruises. Since the 2007/2008 cruise season, all of Celebrity Cruises’ ships were renamed using the “Celebrity” prefix.
